ah kasi doctor

Doctors.

It is a privilege being a doctor. You earn like everybody else who has a job. Then we get to touch people's lives. How amazing is that?

During that interview for med school. We may have said we wanted to save lives. For humanity. There is truth to that. But the sole reason? Is it that? Some of us may have been influenced because our parents are doctors. Or we wanted power. Or we are simply not satisfied... we may perhaps want to be looked up with high regard. Partly wrong, but possible. House, MD said we're doctors not because we wanted to save lives but because saving lives make us happy. But does the latter sound better when you ponder on it? Happiness and saving lives.

Dra Javier said people look on to us in different ways. We are regarded at times as mayabang, and they may say, ang yabang naman por ke doctor. I know sometimes we walk taller than the others because we think we deserve it. But people will keep on seeing that in a wrong way. That's how it is going to be. But we have to strive not to make them see us as just mayabang. Even if they don't know how it is like to be here.

Some look at us glamorously. That's not bad either. Maybe we earned it. Each one of us have eaten our humble pies. Each doctor has sacrificed a lot. We all went through the hard stuff. We spent hours and hours reading, getting bad grades despite of. We get humiliated for not knowing much. We ate dirt. We pushed stretchers, wheelchairs; we slept on the floors, slept sitting, or forget to sleep. We did typewriting, secretarial jobs. We don't eat on time. We sacrifice a lot of time, for family and friends, our significant others, ourselves. We may have relationships broken for being in the hospital saving lives... We cried a dozen times for trying and trying and sometimes feeling we don't get there.. We cannot complain, 'cause, remember, we were the ones who chose this path..

Also, I hope that in the midst of all this striving... for the diploma and success, I hope not one will forget to strive to be better human beings. Sayang naman the privilege if you're just looked up as "ah kasi doctor". Extra nalang yun. Success? It is earning the respect of people. plus their affection.

[I feel I'm not even close to saying what I'm really trying to.. not as clear as my thoughts are in my cerebrum. so i'm stopping now.]
