While "dieters" limit their rice to one cup, those people unconcerned with weight indulge in more servings. And since it is the staple food, most Filipinos tend to think that not eating rice is bad or is equivalent to "not eating a meal". So that when they ask you if you've already eaten, they are actually asking if you've eaten rice already. Or if you answer "no", you've probably HAVE EATEN and you were meaning to say you haven't eaten rice yet.
And yes, i'm talking about white rice.
White rice is a bad carbohydrate... Did you know that?
haha.. probably not. well, it's not bad bad. it's just that there's better carbohydrate sources. here's some list i got from love to know
good carbs:
- Fruit
- Vegetables
- Whole grains and foods made from whole grains, such as bread and cereal
- Beans
- Nuts
- Legumes
bad carbs
- Refined grains like white bread and white rice
- Processed foods such as cake, cookies and chips
- Soft drinks
- Alcohol
There's what we term as simple carbohydrates (or the monosaccharides or disaccharides) which are those composed of one unit of carbohydrate (mono-) or two units (di-).... these simple carbs are usually the sweet carbs.. they come in the form of glucose, fructose/sucrose, galactose. And these simple carbs are USUALLY the "bad carbs".
The other type is the complex carbohydrates... these are made up of three (oligosaccharhides) or more (polsaccharides) units of carbohydrates. these are commonly found in fruits, nuts, grains. These too are USUALLY referred to as the "good carbs".
So anyway, the key is, we should minimize intake of simple and/or bad carbs... these are the ones that shoot up our blood sugar very quickly/ ABRUPTLY, and so more insulin (which lowers down blood sugar) is produced.. because of this, the tendency is for us to feel hunger more quickly. As opposed to eating complex and/or good carbs, which contain fiber and all that (haha... ) causes only a GRADUAL rise in insulin so that you don't easily get hungry after a meal... also because it has fiber, it serves as a filler, making you feel full.
I said minimize not totally abstain... =)
